The small island of Formentera has come into its own in recent years. Once known for its proximity to Ibiza and its tranquil beaches, the island now boasts a thriving gastronomic scene. Menus tend to have a strong Italian influence, with an emphasis on excellent local seafood.
If you’re looking for the trendiest and most popular restaurants, in a paradise atmosphere, sunset and beach lunch, here are our 6 favorite places on the island to feast or simply grab a bite after a good swim.
1. Juan Y Andrea, eating paella on the beach at Ses Illetes
Juan Y Andrea is located in the dunes of Illetes beach. The restaurant is immediately recognizable by the four huge palm trees that surround it and are the only trees on the beach. It was founded in 1971 by a local fisherman and his wife. Originally a small seafood shack, it is now a large restaurant with a huge shaded “terrace” with tables directly on the sand.
The principle of the restaurant hasn’t changed, and it’s still a family-run restaurant with exceptional local seafood specialties. The lobster paella is particularly good, as are the local shrimps. This place is a must-see during your stay on the island.
2. Among the best restaurants in Formentera: Aigua
Located on La Savina marina and boasting a large outdoor terrace, Aigua is an excellent choice for a romantic dinner. The menu is mainly seafood, with a focus on Italian cuisine, but there’s also excellent sushi and sashimi on the menu.
The restaurant isn’t cheap, but it’s easy to see why it’s so popular: the setting is beautiful, and the food is excellent and well presented on the plate. The restaurant is only open in the evening, and the terrace tables are the most popular, so it’s best to make a reservation.
3. Can Carlos, an enchanting setting
With its outdoor terrace set in a magnificent garden where lights twinkle in the trees, Can Carlos in Sant Francesc de Formentera; offers a romantic setting worthy of an enchanting film. But the garden isn’t everything: the food and service are fantastic, as is the wine list.
The menu is Mediterranean, with a strong Italian bias, and the seafood is particularly good, with the local calamari and tuna carpaccio being the most popular. This restaurant is extremely popular and only opens for dinner. It is therefore essential to book in advance, especially if you wish to sit outside.
4. Can Dani ex-Michelin star in Sant Ferran de Ses Roques
Can Dani serves traditional cuisine with a contemporary twist, using local produce wherever possible. Once the proud owner of a Michelin star (the first restaurant in Ibiza and Formentera to receive one), the restaurant unfortunately no longer carries this distinction, but that shouldn’t discourage you from visiting.
Set in a rustic, contemporary-style finca with a pretty courtyard, the cuisine is truly innovative, and the incredible tasting menu with wine pairings lets you sample the chef’s full range.
5. A Mi Manera, one of the best restaurants in Formentera (Sant Francesc de Formentera)
Discover the true flavors of Formentera in the beautiful country garden of A Mi Manera, in the company of nature’s parfaits. The tables are surrounded by greenery, vegetables and flowers, while the covered terrace provides an elegant space for dining with family or friends. The courtyard is the ideal place for an aperitif.
A Mi Manera is a place where you can enjoy fresh, home-cooked dishes, just as nature intended. The action starts at sunset, so be sure to reserve your table to catch the bell!
Fantastic fish and tender meats are served with seasonal, organically grown vegetables, while surprising starters and antipasti offer unique flavors born of innovative creations.
It’s a must on the Formentera bucket list, as regulars rave about Formentera ceviche with celery and spring onion, marinated in orange and tomato. Try a 50-day-aged steak or fresh Formentera fish, from sea to plate. Get ready to bite into a delicious slice of Formentera!
6. Ca Na Joana: Mediterranean seafood restaurant
Ca Na Joana is located in the center of Sant Francesc de Formentera, in a beautifully restored 17th-century house with a pleasant inner courtyard. Mediterranean cuisine is fresh, simple and delicious. The impeccable service will make your evenings truly memorable. Traditional dishes such as slow-cooked lamb at low temperatures are to die for. And let’s not forget the freshly caught seafood, which is absolutely sublime.
7. Es Moli de Sal: one of the best spots for sunset dining
A family-run venue in La Savina, this seafront bar-restaurant is the place to go if you want to enjoy a perfect view of the sunset before a drink. Es Moli de Sal is located in an old windmill by the sea. It’s apparently a favorite of the King of Spain and other celebrities, which explains the exorbitant prices. Drinks are quite reasonable, however, and if you’re prepared to spend money on a good meal, the extensive seafood menu is very good, and the homemade ice creams are much appreciated. Boaters can reach the shore using the restaurant’s water cab service.
