But there’s much more to explore in this mythical place. From a magnificent open-air cinema to a cool microbrewery, from wine cellars adorned with works of art to cooking classes celebrating Santorini’s typical gastronomic culture… The Cycladic island is packed with treasures, so follow the guide to find out what’s not to be missed on Santorini!

1. Visit Santorini and stroll through its charming clifftop villages

The main activity on Santorini is, of course, strolling along the edge of the caldera and admiring the sea views. The walks in and around Fira are absolutely spectacular, especially to the north, towards Firostefani and Imerovigli. Take the path along the Caldera. This will take you to Oia. That said, it’s no mean feat to make your way along this path, as it can be tricky once you’ve passed Imerovigli. It’s about 9 km in all. It’s a good four-hour walk, one way. So only for hiking enthusiasts.

2. Discover Santorini’s wine culture

Santorini’s most popular wines are its dry whites and the sweeter amber-colored Vinsanto, ideal with desserts. Both are made from the indigenous Assyrtiko grape variety. A dozen local wineries organize tastings accompanied by local products to nibble on. Experiencing wine tasting on Santorini connects you directly with the island’s history and roots. The landscape and the local produce are a perfect match. If you’d like to enjoy Greek wines and have an unforgettable time, take a look at SantoWines.

3. See the real Atlantis

Over 3,000 years ago, a powerful volcanic eruption consumed Santorini, causing the center of the island to disappear into the ocean. The island has long been considered home to the legend of Atlantis. The volcanic eruption was one of the largest in the world, occurring around 1,600 BC.

Not only did it cause most of the island of Thera (Santorini’s former name) to sink beneath the ocean. But it also left an enormous crater that formed the vast cliffs of Santorini. Some believe that Atlantis was located here.

4. Explore Santorini’s capital, Fira

Fira, an ancient city, is the capital of Santorini (don’t expect it to be as big as other capitals in Europe). But, for a tiny capital, Fira offers magnificent views, picturesque churches and pretty cobbled streets. To better understand Santorini’s past, visit the Thera Archaeological Museum. It will give you a great insight into the island’s heritage and past.

4. Enjoy local food

Greece is known for its incredible (and healthy) food and Santorini is no exception. There are so many amazing local dishes you must try.

Greek dishes are known for their use of fresh vegetables, flavorful herbs and high-quality olive oil. From seafood to lamb, many Greek meals are prepared on the grill and served with a salad and a glass of wine. Food in Santorini is generous, with a multitude of colorful and delicious small dishes (mezze).

Ntomatokeftedes (tomato fritters or tomato balls) is the dish you absolutely must try during your stay on Santorini. It’s made from juicy cherry tomatoes chopped with fresh herbs and onions, fried in olive oil. They are usually served with tzatziki sauce and capers. All accompanied by a glass of chilled Assyrtiko white wine!

Good address: the Pelekanos tavern in Oia boasts a breathtaking view of the sea (idyllic setting guaranteed). The menu is very varied. Grilled fish in particular is served. The staff are pleasant and attentive. Feeling cold? We’ll bring you plaids! If your dream is to enjoy Greek specialties while admiring the sunset at Oia, this is one of the best spots. After a feast at Pelekanos, you’re ready for the city’s nightlife. Let’s party!

Looking for quality street food? Try PitoGyros. Street food is extremely popular on Santorini. The souvlakis, traditional meat skewers, are a pure delight. They are wrapped in pita bread. It’s cheap and absolutely delicious (especially served with home fries).

5. Hike to the summit of Santorini’s volcano

Love hiking? Book a boat for a sea excursion to the island of Nea Kameni.

Néa Kaméni is a volcanic island in the Aegean Sea. It lies at the center of the Santorini caldera. It is the active part of the volcano that gave rise to the present-day islands of the Santorini complex. The island is crowned by a crater. Its highest point is 150 meters high.

Some boats make a short stop on the edge of the island’s geothermal points, which heat the sea below. A must-see!

6. Sailing around Santorini

To get around Santorini, you can always rent a car. But remember, if renting a car seems like a good solution, you’re in the Cyclades, on an island, so a boat is also an excellent way. Being at sea gives you another vantage point from which to admire the white houses of the villages clinging to the cliffs. And by boat, you can be dropped off off a black sand beach for a swim in the Aegean Sea.

No trip to the Greek islands is complete without a boat trip. It’s one of the best things to do on Santorini, to tour the island and see it in its entirety. Most itineraries pass through the most spectacular parts of the bay.

7. Visit the picturesque village of Pyrgos

If you move away from the edge of the Caldera, you’ll discover many amazing places, such as the small village of Pyrgos (population less than 1,000).
